How do I set up a nonprinting gutter?

I do print jobs in InDesign CS4, using Lightning Source as my printer. They refuse the job if I allow ink inside the 0.25'' gutter area (near the spine). Why they can't remove the ink themselves in preflight, I don't know, but that's how it is.

So how can I set up a nonprinting gutter area? I looked at the various options InDesign offers but don't see anything. I'm getting tired of having to manually go through each page and see if there is content within 0.25'' of the spine.

You could add a white rectangle in the area. Put it on the master page on the highest layer, then lock the layer.

Or you could just follow directions and not put anything there.

So if you had a nonprinting area wouldn't it just cut off whatever you

had put there previously? You want an easy solution, but if you've

somehow intentionally put stuff in a place that it doesn't belong, are

you sure you want to just cover it up without checking first what you're

covering up?

Do you set up any guides? Do you know how to crop images?
