Multi-Level Numbered Lists CS4

I have a document that I need to include Auto-numbering and am having trouble getting the sub sections to number correctly. There are often a number of paragraphs before the next subhead (H2).%26lt;br /%26gt;%26lt;br /%26gt;On the H2 style if I don't insert a number after the chapter ^H^ then it automatically goes to 8.2.2 instead of maintaining the Chapter 8.1 until the next H1 head. I don't want to have separate styles for each H2 such as 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4. Is there way I can do this? Am i missing something. That is where I got the styles for what I did, but I can't seem to get the second level to work automatically. Which means I have to create separate styles for each of the sub heads



8.2 (this one auto generates)

8.2.1 This one is styled ^H.^2.^#^t (I can't get this subhead to auto generate)

8.2.2 This one is styled ^H.^2.^#^t



8.3 (this one auto generates)

8.3.1 This one is styled ^H.^3.^#^t (I can't get this subhead to auto generate)

8.3.2 This one is styled ^H.^3.^#^t
