Creating circle label template in ID CS4

Hello,

I am attempting to build a template for .75'' circle label sheets. 120 per sheet. 10 across, 12 down. I have aprox 150 different products, and I need one page of labels per item. Is there an easy way to put artwork and text in all label fields at the same time?

I would like to create each label in Illustrator, then import it to the template. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Tyson

It sounds as if the label will be entirely composed in Illustrator - that is, you won't be laying in text over an image in ID.

To do that, I would work out, through trial(printing) and error, the exact position for the first label image on the sheet. Once you have that nailed, with the specific printer you'll be using for output, use step and repeat to copy the image to a 10x12 matrix with the spacing of the labels from the sheet.

The only quick way I can think of to do 150 such is to create all the label images with a simple filename - Product_001.eps through Product_150.eps or some such - and then rename each in turn to Product_prn.eps and use that filename in the ID document. So the cycle would be:

1) Rename first product label to ..._prn.eps.

2) Open ID document.

3) Print as many labels of that item as you need.

4) Close ID document.

5) Rename ..._prn.eps back to ..001.eps or whatever.

Go to 1, repeat.

You could probably use Data Merge to populate pages for each product, as long as the positioning can be standardized (i.e. you can pre-format the image position and scale in the frame, and it remains constant for all products).

To do that set up a data file with the path to each each artwork file, then set up the page as NitroPress suggests, but instead of placing the actual art put the merge field in the frame. When you run the merge you should get one page for each product in the list.

Can Data Merge be used with images, though? Unless I misread the OP, he wants to design the label in Illustrator and then use ID merely as a multi-up page manager.

If it was a standard background image with text overlaid, something like Data Merge would be appropriate.

Yes. The text file holds the path to the image. It's all covered pretty well in the help files, that's where I learned how to do it.

I used Data Merge to make a slide show of exhibit entries for a juried art show at the local museum. It was amazing how well it worked.

Thanks for all of your input. I have multiple products that are in the same category, and would have the same image background, although I would need to change the text on each of them. I agree with the file # system, as all of our products have a product # associated with them. I have not used the Data Merge feature before, but it sounds like the way to go.

Does anyone know if Quark 8.0 will open any Adobe native file types? I have converted some logos to EPS, but seem to have trouble opening the files.
