InDesign export to PDF = HUGE file

Hello everyone!

I create manuals that are put on my company's website; when I export from InDesign, the PDF files end up being 1-1.14M. When I would export from PageMaker the PDF would be around 400K.

The manuals are 4-5 pages, all diagrams are vector art, and all graphic files are EPS.

Here is a link to one of the manuals:

http://iotaengineering.com/Manuals/i320tbtsd.pdf

I have read through a thread regarding this very issue, but after trying every suggestion I had no change in file size.

These files are much larger than I would like to put on the website, I have been working on this issue for the past 3 days and cannot get a handle on it.

Thanks for all your help!

First of all I don't consider 1 meg huge by any stretch, but you haven't

told us what version of ID you're using or the settings you used or what

your definition of trying every suggestion means.

This PDF is from Pagemaker. Can you show us the same thing from Indesign?

You should be using Illustrator AI files, not EPS. That might make a bit of difference to file size, but probably not a hell of a lot.

Sarah,

the quoted PageMaker-PDF has 120kBytes.

That's fairly small. But it's in sRGB,

which is bad for printing, if left uncorrected.

In InDesign (ID) use Export to PDF with Convert

to Grayscale, or convert later by

Tools %26gt; Print Production %26gt; Convert Colors.

By the way, one font is not embedded, which

is probably repaired by font substitution or

Use Local Fonts (if enabled).

This sRGB-bug doesn't explain a huge file size

(the PM-PDF is! small). Neither does it the fact

that the sources are plain EPS'. The EPS code is

stripped and an ID-PDF contains only the graphics

elements.

Now, if the ID-PDF should be still too large,

you can try

Tools %26gt; Print Production %26gt; PDF-Optimizer, or

File %26gt; Reduce File Size .

Of course it would be much better to analyze

the workflow.

One common source of huge file size are embedded

CMYK profiles. This cannot be checked here because

we don't have the ID-PDF.

PS.:

An ID doc with one vector graphic Grap.EPS delivered

a 33kB PDF.

The ID doc with the same vector graphic Grap.AI delivered

a 56 kB PDF, which could be shrinked to 33kB by

File %26gt; Reduce File Size.
