I've been making a bunch of certificates that are identical except for the name. So I'm auto-flowing in a list of names. I set the empty text box (that I'm flowing into) to have a paragraph style called ''Name'' -- I then imported an ASCII file thinking that it would pick up the ''Name'' style. Only it doesn't. So I then apply ''Name'' to all the boxes. That works fine, except that I then have the wrong number of pages (this because the ''Name'' style would have set the paragraphs to start in the next frame, only it's not getting picked). It's no major problem since I just add a new page and then reflow after applying the paragraph style. I just wondered if there was a way to make an imported document pick up a paragraph style as it comes in (?).
Hope that made sense.
Thanks, Phyllis
Paragraph Style in autoflow
Hi Phyllis,
This sounds like a perfect use for Data Merge, and you have your text file already (except maybe for the first line which needs to be the name of the field)!
Set up one page, start data merge and drag the field name into the frame. Apply your style to the frame, and you should be good to go.
Of course, auto-flow should ALSO work. I do that for making tickets and flow a text file of numbers. I put the frames on the master page and selected them, then assigned my number style, which includes start paragraph in next frame, and it seems to work. It may help that the frame isn't tall enough to hold more than a single line of text, though.
If all else fails, open the text file in Word, apply any formatting you like and give it a style name, then save and map the style to the ID style when you place that.

Paragraph Style in autoflow
With nothing selected, choose the paragraph style you want. Now all new
frames will begin with that style and unstyled text placed or pasted in
them should pick up that style.

Thanks! Good suggestions all 'round... :-)

Funny I didn't notice that I just needed to select the style. I think I'm just used to ASCII text falling into whatever style is present. But setting a paragraph style without copy doesn't seem to have much effect.
I definitely need to play around with DataMerge at some point too.
Thanks, Phyllis

I think it would have the effect you want if you set the style with
*some* copy, maybe just a space. It's just that the end-of-file marker
doesn't seem to take on the style without something there to hold it.
