InDesign and creating catalogue from...

Hi,

I was ''assigned'' to create a address book for my company and since all data/input (names, position, department, address, etc) are stored in a database and is continuously updated I decided to create the address book (catalogue) in Microsoft Access 2007.

I used an ODBC link to the SQL-database and created the output catalogue in ''reports'', using the built in format ''tricks'' to get it as slick as possible.

Everything good, but my fallacy to look for better solutions brought me to inDesign and since this is what the pros use I like to ask how this feet could be accomplished in inDesign?

That is, does inDesign support ODBC and ''rules'' that calls up different templates depending on how the data looks like in the table? (e.g. if department = Accounting use this template, etc).

Kindly,

Mikael Lindqvist

InDesign have only simple DataMerge option

and I don't think that you can use different templates even with XML ... unless you define all formatting in XML ...

you can contact me on priv and show me what you want to achieve - I have few tools that I can adapt to your needs
