Multi-level numbered lists in different...

I'm going CRAZY! Using CS3, I have 1 document, 3 chapters, with mufti-level numbers lists (legal style) that drill down to 5 levels. My problem is in getting the numbers to increment properly. I have already created multiple paragraph styles that include the Bullets %26amp; Numbering options to have my defined List (HeadingList) increment and then to restart with any previous level. Interestingly, I get the deeper levels to increment fine. The Chapter Level is a particular problem.. and the next level also is finicky.. incrementing fine in one chapter, not the next, then again fine in the final chapter. WEIRD! I believe I have a problem with the Chapter Number (is that the same as the Chapter Variable for a Master Page?) ... because when I use the Numbering %26amp; Section Options dialog to Start New Section, and then I change the Chapter Number, THAT chapter number is applied to the ENTIRE to document (even backtracking). HELP! I have already created a ''dummy'' style-level 1 which allows subsequent style-levels to increment better than before, but it did not fix the Chapter Level and next level.
Multi-level numbered lists in different...
Hi, Debra:

When numbering goes whacky, it's often thrown off by an intervening paragraph whose style is unintentionally assigned to the list.

It's not clear if your three chapters are sections in the same single file, or are separate files in a book. There can only be one Chapter Number per file.

If you are using three files in a book, it would help us troubleshoot if you showed the numbering codes for each heading paragraph style in the list, and what result you expect, like:

Heading1: ^H.^1. 1.1. text

Heading2:^H.^1.^2. 1.1.1 text

Heading3: ^H.^1.^2.^3. 1.1.1 text

etc.

Just preparing these examples may help you visualize better how multi-level numbering works, and, perhaps reveal a clue to fixing the problems.
