I'm completely new to InDesign. What are the best books for learning CS4?

Sandee Cohen's Visual Quick Start Guide is the ultimate ID newbie book.

I, too, am new to ID and I have bought several books on how to use it. Based on my experience, I second the Sandee Cohen book as a great choice BUT I don't think it is the best way to get an introduction to ID; rather, I think it is THE book to have next to you when you know what question to ask and need an answer.
I'd recommend 2 other books as a way to learn about ID: (1) Adobe InDesign CS4 Digital Classroom by Christopher Smith (ISBN 978-0-470-41094-3) and (2) Exploring Adobe InDesign CS4 by Terry Ryberg (ISBN 978-1-4354-4200-9). Both of these books provide lessons on how to accomplish tasks and what can be done with ID.
If you can only buy 1 book, then Sandee Cohen's is the most useful long-term, but if you really want an introduction to ID, one of the other books is better supplemented with Cohen's book.
Sadly, none of the books currently available, including Sandee Cohen's, are focused on long document preparation or on the ''new'' technologies such as using ID to produce ebooks. There is a real dearth of information on how to use ID for ebook production.

A newbie should head straight to lynda.com/deke and avail themselves of the free 7-day trial. You can get through as much ID stuff as you can in seven days (and there's a lot of stuff). The video training is excellent.

JoJo,
may I also suggest www.theindesigner.com
There are some excellent tutorial videos/podcasts on that site.
Adobe has their 'Classroom in a Book' with a disk of exercises, too.
