save command is greyed out

I am new to using Indesign CS3 with the latest version 5.0.4 on a Windows Vista machine. Why is the save command under File Menu is greyed out on existing Documents? The Save As and Save a Copy are fine and on New Documents the Save command is fine too. But cannot use CTRL S or from file menu Save on an existing document file. I thought this was pretty odd since i have used Photoshop CS4 and Adobe Acrobat with no problems.

Thanks

Have you made changes to the document that require saving? The save command is always grayed out until you edit something.

If that isn't it, try replacing your preferences.

I think it's also greyed out when you first open a doc that was saved under a previous version, such as when you open a cs3 doc in cs4. that's sort of a reminder that when you save it's going to convert to cs4.

When you open a doc in a more recent version it should say (Converted) in the title bar, and yes, Save will be grayed out until you've done a save as to convert to the new format.
