Indesign 2.0 has stopped opening...

Suddenly last month Indesign 2.0 stopped opening pagemaker 7 files, after 2 years of converting PM files to indd files and then converting to pfd files without any problems. Now it will not even open the PM files it opened years ago. It will open the indd files it produced years ago. It now gives the message that it either doesn't recognize the type of file or is missing a plugin. I am using an XP, I have uninstalled and reinstalled PM and ID, I have upgraded to ID 2.0.2 and PM 7.01. I have gone back 2 weeks and 1 month ago and tried to restore the system. I have tried convrting to PM6.5 format (p65) rather than PM7 format (pmd)Please help me, I do all my Newsletters and Journals in Pagemaker and use ID to convert to PDF before taking to the commercial printers.

Thanks,

Did you upgrade to SP3? If so, that's the reason.

Indesign 2.0 has stopped opening...
I sure did.

Is there any way of reversing the effect of sp3 on PM and ID?

Larry

Roll it back to SP2.

But I gotta question your workflow...why not just print to Adobe PDF and

from Pagemaker and be done with it?

Bob

When I first started using Pagemaker, I tried exporting pmd files as pdf, but always got a message that there was no PS printer installed and the program would not create pdf files. (It always seemed strange that Adobe would have capabilities to ''export to pdf'' within PM, but not provide a ps printer or a distiller with the package.)

After getting ID, I had another way of producing a pdf, so never looked into installing a ps printer driver.

It took a while, but I have deleted XP SP3, reinstalled the security files that were recommended. (It is funny that the uninstall program warned me that ID, Acrobat and a slough of other program may not work well once I had removed SP3.) So far no crashes and ID is again working!

Thanks so much for your help. Surprised I couldn't find more about this incompatability problem on the web or at Adobe.

I thought Pagemaker DID ship with Distiller, and the Adobe Postscript driver that would allow you to install a virtual printer on File so you could make PDF directly. Of course that's going to be a really old version, but not a lot older than the ID 2 export library. :)

I am a novice to forums, but I've gone through this thread and hopefully one of you can help.聽 I'm having the same issue trying to open PM6.5 files in ID CS2.聽 It says the file is damaged when I know it's not and ID CS2 used to do it a couple years ago.聽 I'm also having an issue with creating PDF files from PM65 now which I never had before - Windows keeps erroring out.

I also have Windows XP with SP3 installed.聽 The link that Bob included on indesignsecrets.com didn't work (I'll also cruise around that site to see if I can find the article anyway).聽 But, I don't know how to roll back to SP2 to see if it will help.聽 Can anyone help me with how I do that?

Thanks a bunch - Maren

Thry this link. XP SP3 breaks PM in ID

You should be able to copy/paste the other one, and delete the %20 caused by the line wrap, but this will be easier.

You should be able to roll back to SP2 from Control Panel %26gt; Add /Remove Programs, but you'll have to go back to Windows Update and get all the critical updates again.

Thanks Peter, especially for responding so quickly聽 - Duh, I did forget to delete the %20, that's what gave me the error.聽聽聽 Yep, the error Bob has there is exactly the error I get in IDCS2.聽 Thanks for the info on rolling back to SP2.聽 A pain to make sure I get the critical updates back in, but I have quite a few PM65 files, so it'll be worth it, just to convert them at least.聽 Thanks again!
