Indesign PDF Issues

Hi

We are having issues with the speed of Indesign CS3 version 5.0, I'll give you some background.

We are working on large hires documents with all files stored on a server. Also we are not running Version Cue. Basically, we have speed issues whilst printing, exporting pdfs, postscript creation, and slow movement when scrolling through documents. for e.g. it takes us 20 minutes just to pdf a 2 page spread.

Our pc's spec is as follows.

AMD Athlon 64 X2

Core Processor 5000+

2.59 Ghz

1.87 GB of RAM

I have worked on G5 macs in the past which were so much quicker, i am not clued up when it comes to PC's, so any help would be much appreciated.

I have used D.A.M's in the past with all files stored on a seperate server...would that help? And also would MADETOPRINT speed up our pdf creation?

Thanks

While you have not much ram, the probable cause of your woes is the network.

What OS etc?

Are you printing to PDF or exporting?

Thanks for the quick replies.

Sorry, the operating system is Windows XP Pro 2002 SP2. And we are having problems both exporting and printing to pdf.

Also Simon,

In regards to not much RAM, what would be the optimum spec for RAM?

As far as RAM goes, the max you can use is always nice. For XP pro that's 3GB. I run with XP pro SP2 with 2 GB myself, and I don't see speed issues (or at least not unexpected ones). I suspect the problem is the network, too.

What happens if you make a local copy? First save as to make a local copy of the doc, then use the ''copy links to...'' command in the links panel menu to copy the links and relink to the new location.

You indicate you are using InDesign 5.0. Are you really using 5.0 or have you applied the updates. The most recent update brings your software up to 5.0.4. Many problems with the original 5.0 were fixed in the subsequent updates.

I would tend to agree that local copies of your assets would likely cause significant performance gains for you.

Thanks for your replies, all helpful. We will make sure that we are all running the same version of Indesign as well.

I know the size of files have an impact in indesign documents, for e.g. using a 300dpi image at 10%. Would this slow printing and pdf creation down?

Does anybody use any Digital Asset management software to re size images to the right size in your document?
