Find and replace with paragraph styles

(InD CS3 5.04, Win XP)

I was working on an InD document where I had to include text from lots of different Word Docs and I wanted to format all the type set up as bullets in word to a paragraph style I defined. So in the Find/Change box I inserted the following:

Find: ^8^t

Change to: (nothing)

Change format: Body-bullets (paragraph style uses auto bullet feature)

This would change the text to the correct paragraph style, but wouldn't delete the original bullet mark and tab. I would have to re-run the find/change without the format change to delete the bullet and tab.

Am I doing something wrong or is this how it's supposed to work?

Thanks,

Carrie
Find and replace with paragraph styles
Yes, this is how it works. If you're replacing any kind of formatting,

ID will replace something with something, but it won't replace something

with nothing. In this way, you can, for instance, search for the word

''Table'' in bold and replace with a table head style without losing the

word ''Table''.

OTOH, if you do the same thing and replace ''Table'' with ''Figure'', ID

will make the change.

Find and replace with paragraph styles
Ok thanks.

I played with it a bit more after posting, and found that a good work around could be to replace with a hair space or something equally tiny.

How about something that takes up no space at all, like a discretionary

hyphen or a discretionary line break?
