I had a problem installing the trial of InDesign, but tried to run in and it crashed on startup. So I uninstalled in and reinstalled it, but apparently it left something behind because it STILL crashes on startup. How do I completely uninstall it (the uninstaller doesn't get everything) so that I can install cleanly?

Which version?
Crash on Startup/Uninstall Help
CS4, I think, on XP SP3

This will probably remove any earlier version Adobe products as well.
I tried it but it only saw DreamWeasel, so maybe it's uninstalling completely? FYI, is it possible that it's just a startup problem and it installed okay? It's crashing when it tries to initialize plugins, is that a common problem?

If it installed OK it probably wouldn't have a start-up problem. ;)
Do you have a font manger installed, or use a lot of free fonts?
Peter
I do have a lot of free fonts, and I saw that one that started with U sometimes caused problems, but I don't have that one. Should I reduce fonts and try again anyways? Is there an expanded list of problem fonts?
Back up you fonts and then uninstall all but the system fonts and the OpenType fonts that came with the application and see if that works.
If it does, reinstall your other fonts in groups, checking each time. Start with the fonts from reliable foundries and save the free ones for last.
I'm not aware of any list of bad fonts. If you find one you might want to post it.

I tried that, no dice. Crashes in the exact same place. I also tried it once without most of the plugins, too, in case that was the problem, since it crashes when initializing them.
Search for and delete any adobefnt*.lst files. Do not delete the adobefnt.db file.
Are you able to tell exactly how far into loading the plugins? There are messages that flash at the lower part of the splash screen.
In CS3 there was occasionally a problem with the SING technology that would do this, but I haven't heard of similar problems in CS4. The cure for that was to rename the SING folder.
I'm not finding a SING folder, but I tried deleting the adobefnt files and it didn't change anything. I'm also not getting a lot of messages flashing on the splash screen. I get something about 218 plug ins, then another messsage I can't remember, and then initializing plug ins then it crashes. It DOES have a weird flash of something else before it crashes. I've noticed it's like another picture or something, maybe with some black and red and white in it? It flashes right where the splash screen is and then it goes away and after a few more seconds indesign crashes. And it's not the screensaver or anything, I've got mine set on 9999 minutes...
And regardless of whether we fix this or not, thank you so much for all the effort and help!
The SING folder should be at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\SING
I renamed it and it still crashed. Should I uninstall, restart, rename it, install, restart and then try it again? I've been doing that every time, by the way, to keep things as clean as possible. Do I need to uninstall reinstall and restart several times for all the troubleshooting we're doing, or since I'm using the latest download trial of indesign are we assuming it's a clean install?
At this point I'm afraid I'm about out of ideas. Have you run the clean script again?
It only ever sees Dreamweasel.
Do you know if Adobe has pre-sales support for when the trials won't run?
I know they do for paid installations, but I'm not so sure about trials.
Hey Fritters, were you able to resolve this problem? Cuz I'm struggling with it too.
