I did an evaluation using a trial version of ID/CS3. Most of my test documents were very good.
When I tried the TOC, I did not get the results I wanted. I have read many posts, examined the ID help doc, and looked through two book on ID. None show an example as follows:
Section One
General info.... 1-1
First Subject Matter.... 1 - 2-4
Second Subject Matter..... 1 - 5-8
Third Subject Matter.... 1 - 9
Section Two
General info.... 2-1
First Subject Matter.... 2 - 2-4
Second Subject Matter..... 2 - 5-8
Third Subject Matter.... 2 - 9
Section Three
General info.... 3-1
First Subject Matter.... 3 - 2-4
Second Subject Matter..... 3 - 5-8
Third Subject Matter.... 3 - 9
Instead, what I got as a result, and what examples show is pages numbered consecutively, from 1 through 40 (for example)
Also, after running the TOC, all my sections were renumber. Instead of Section Two starting as ''Section 2 Page 1'', I got ''Section 2 Page 29''..
How do I set up the ''book'' and sections as individual documents, and build the TOC without the process renumbering? Can someone give me a web site of an example set-up.
Thanks,
RPP

The built-in TOC doesn't do ranges, as I think you wish, but Index might work for you (though I think it would be as much, or more, work as building it manually. I suspect this could be done, however, using a script, so you might want to ask in the scripting forum.

Thanks for replying.
I guess I should have been more clear.
I'm not so much concerned with the ''range'' as I am for having each section main its divisions:
Section One
blah, blah... 1-1
blah, blah... 1-3
Section Two
blah, blah.... 2-1
blan, blah... 2-4
I know I have to extend the ''range'' manually. I do it all the time in PageMaker. It takes me less than three minutes to do that.
My question was, how do I prevent InDesign from repaginating the entire collection of documents.
What I don't want is...
Section One
blah, blah.... (begins with page 7)(Cover=p1 and p2; TOC=p3,p4,p5, and p6)
blah, blah... (was Section 1 begins with 1-1, after running toc becomes page 8)
Section Two
blah, blah... (was Section 2, begins with page 2-1: after running toc becomes page 15)
Section Three
blah, blah... (was Section 3, page 1: after becomes page 27)
How do I get InDesign TOC Book (export pdf bookmarks)function to maintain each section starts at page 1.
As I said, I do it all the time in PageMaker. I just don't know what options in ID I need to turn on and off and when.
Thanks
RPP
Have you got the section page start options set to automatic or ''Start at'' for each section? Also check the numbering options in the Book Panel flyout menu, and the synchronization options. I don't do a lot of books, and the last few have been single documents, not individual files for each section, so I'm getting into territory here that isn't all that familiar.
