I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, restoring to all of my original fonts, even downloaded a trial copy of CS4. Nothing is working. Does anyone have any solution or have you seen this problem? It also seems any Indesign files that were on the computer (I've replaced it since as it had other problems) won't open, not just the recent ones.
Thanks for the help!
edit to add, cause I forgot to mention:
I have had some very tiny amounts of luck. I've been able to open Indesign up (not consistently). At first it was trying to recover a file, and after sitting overnight it was able to recover it apparently. So I closed everything and rebooted to try again. It's not trying to recover anymore, but today I let the computer take 8 hrs or so to do its thing, and it was able to open the file.
ID CS3 %26 CS4 Problem
It's a little hard to tell from what you've said if you replaced the computer and did a clean re-installation of CS3, but I think that's what you said.
Are these problem files stored locally on the hard drive, or are they, or the links, on a network share? If you create a new file in CS3 can you close ID and re-open the new file?

ID CS3 %26 CS4 Problem
Sorry that it was not quite readable. Yes, I have started with a completely different computer and install of windows and adobe products since I originally had the problem.
These problem files are stored on the local hard drive. I'm able to create new files once it opens (takes a long time to open just indesign) and save them, reopening isn't a problem it seems, with a tiny empty file.
This morning I was working on a larger file as it opened overnight. Another bit to add to the information here, once it was open, everything seems to be working well. When I hit save however, things freeze up again and I apparently have to wait.
Thanks for your help!

What is your default printer, and does it show as on-line?
My default printer is the Adobe PDF printer. It appears to be showing up working.
Something is terribly wrong, obviously. I think the PDF printer should be fine for the default, so it isn't likely that's it.
What are the specs for the new computer? How much free space do you have on the C: drive? Has it ever been de-fragmented? Have you got a virus scanner or spyware scanner running, and if so, which ones?
Peter
Running XP Pro SP3 on an E6600 dual core, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd with 370 free plus another 750 in the system. Haven't defrag'd because I hadn't thought to need it yet, running AVG Antivirus and Malware Bytes Spyware Protection.
Krystle
I've used both of those scanners in the past on client computers, but never my own system. Is that the free or paid version of AVG, not that it probably matters? Is Malware Bytes running in the background, or do you only start it to run a scan?
My suspicion is this may be overly aggressive scanner settings. Try shutting them both off for a test and restart ID. If performance improves, turn one on at a time to see which is the culprit.

My computer guy sitting here says to mention this: When Indesign has it's fits of freezing, I can open any other program on the computer. When the Indesign window is the only one not minimized (it doesn't minimize when froze) any screen I have on top of it will leave a trail of it's window when I move it. When the Indesign window isn't the only one up (say I have firefox up) those trails won't appear.
Malware Bytes only will run when I'm doing a scan. Will try turning off the spyware and antivirus, thanks.
Krystle
It wouldn't hurt to also try turning off video hardware acceleration to test the video driver, but it think it's more likely one of the scanners. Don't do it all at once -- too many variables -- test the driver before or after testing the scanners.
