Adjusting to indesign, everything is so...

Maybe it's me... but all the little buttons and flyouts, seem awfully small in indesign. Is there anyway to make everything a bit bigger? I think they try to jam so much into this program, everything got smaller.

I'm still jumping back and forth between PM7 and ind, and I've got to say, that overall, Indesign has some cool intuitive features. But, PageMaker, dare I say it, has a simplicity and workability that is superior to me. Maybe, I'm just still in the learning stages of Indesign and that will change, but my gosh, PM was so much easier and less cumbersome.

Reset your monitor resolution to a lower setting. For example, if you are at

1280X1024 you could try 1024X768. Go to Control Panel/Display and do the

reset.

Of course you can also buy a bigger monitor.

Be extremely careful about changing the resolution of a flat-screen monitor. There are issues reported with dialogs disappearing and apparent program freezes, some of which are traceable to reducing the resolution of LCDs. If you have trouble, that would be the first thing to change back.

You can also go into the Windows display properties dialog (right click a blank spot on the desktop) and go to the settings tab, then click the advanced button. You can change the resolution there from 96 to 120 dpi (or a custom setting) and everything on your screen will be larger. I don't know how this affects application performance, but I haven't seen any reports specifically linking this to problems.

Pagemaker has that simplicity because it is a far simpler program with only a subset of the capabilities of InDesign, and many of the things that are presented directly in the ID interface are hidden away under menus in PM. When you get used to it, you'll find ID is much more convenient and your productivity will skyrocket. :)

That is awful advice if you're running an LCD. I know Peter touched on

it but I'll condemn it completely. LCDs must be run at their native

resolution if you want accurate results.

Users who move to their first large monitor often complain that everything (text, icons, etc.) are too small. This is because the desktop and most apps assume a middling display size and set the default sizes accordingly.

The first step is to reset the desktop scaling size in the display control menus. Scaling the text size will also scale up many of the default screen elements (buttons, sliders, menu bars, etc.) You can also go into other display control menus - it varies with the version of Windows - and manually rescale individual text and graphic elements if the general rescaling isn't ideal for you.

Apps are another story. Some have GUI scaling and control, others take it from the system display scale, others can't be changed. I was wondering if one of the techy ID users knew where screen scaling controls or settings were buried... :)
