Adding index entries to InDesign CS3

I have CS3 ID5.0.4 for Windows. I'm an indexer attempting to index a document which someone else prepared. When I highlight a term and make an index entry of it, as soon as I click OK, the document text itself compresses about a half a line. This happens with most (but apparently not all) entries such that the cumulative text compression is unacceptable. I don't have the original fonts, my computer has substituted like fonts, but it doesn't seem that that should have this effect. It seems more like a program setting on my end that's isn't compatible. Maybe something to do with hyphenation?? kerning?? Something that index tags trigger. Ideas??

Thanks.

Adding index entries to InDesign CS3
Since you are

i modifying

the paragraph (by inserting an index marker), InDesign re-applies the formatting, justification, and hyphenation. Since you don't have the original font, it has to make do with whatever you have -- but the substituted font may have no relation

i at all

with the original one.

Remember that this works in

i two

directions: if you send the modified document back to the author, he'll not thank you for reformatting the text.

Nothing that can be worked around, except by using the original fonts the document was created with.
