the law
Copyright, in the U.S., is inherent in the work, though it can be difficult to prevail in court if you don't include a notice. Generally speaking this means that anything you create that isn't itself a violation of the copyright laws is yours and protected unless you assign the rights, at which point it is still protected, but no longer yours exclusively. Work you perform under a contract or ''work for hire'' agreement may not belong to you at all.

If you have a particular concern, you should consult an attorney who specializes in copyright law. There's a great organization called Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts that helps creative people at little or no cost, depending on what they can afford.

When you draw something on a piece of paper, is the design yours?

Copyright law in the U.S. is no different if you're using a program or a

pencil.
